Borough In Bloom Images

Small photo of planters in Wigan
Wigan Council, its partners in the Leisure & Culture Trust and in Wigan & Leigh Housing, worked hard to deliver the successful North West in Bloom Awards in 2007.  We continue to work with a variety of local volunteers, community groups, residents' associations and many schools. A major programme of planting and eco projects continues to green the borough...and we need your help. Here you can read about some of the recent schemes. If your area isn't mentioned here, please contact us and let us know what is happening there!

Around the borough

Wigan Borough is getting cleaner and greener.  There are plenty of places where flowers and new eco-activities are making a real difference to the quality of life of local people.

Wigan Parish Church Gardens have been planted with a stunning selection of tulips, which made a beautiful backdrop to the spring launch of Wigan Borough in Bloom 2007.

One of the most important routes in Ince has had a green makeover, thanks to local school children and Wigan Council’s Street Scene team.  Around 60 new hanging baskets have been given out to residents along the road as part of the area’s continuing environmental improvements funded by the government’s Single Regeneration Budget (SRB).

All the children had a busy afternoon preparing the baskets and selecting the flowers to go into them, as Ince CE teacher Mr Ashcroft explains: “The class loved taking part in making up the baskets. It’s important that they take part in schemes that are not just for the school itself but also for the wider community. Some children will have never done gardening before and so this was a fun and important activity for them.”
