Stray Dogs
The council's animal wardens have a legal duty to pick up stray dogs. The dogs are looked after for seven days and during that time can be collected but at a charge of £25 within one day or £45.00 after one to seven days.
Dog Fouling
The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996
It is an offence in Wigan Borough not to clean up if your dog fouls on land in the open including playing fields and open spaces maintained by the council, footpaths, parks and cemeteries. Offences are subject to a fixed penalty fine of £50 and, for non-payment, prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.
Collar & Tag
It is a legal requirement for a dog to wear a collar and I.D. tag in a public place. Offences are subject on prosecution to a fine of up to £5,000.
Dangerous Dogs
Dangerous dogs are subject to specific rules about breeds that can be kept and how they are handled. Advice is available from the Animal Warden Service or the Police.
The Responsible Dog Owner
- Cares for their pet
- Prevents their dog from straying
- Encourages fouling at home
- Cleans up immediately if their dog fouls
- Has their dog wormed regularly
- Provides a collar and tag.
Poop scoops are available from the Animal Warden Service, town halls libraries and housing offices.
