Phase 1 - Lowton J&I

Our proposal for Lowton and Golborne is to build a new, state of the art learning campus for youngsters aged between 0-16 years.
Lowton J&I Primary School

Proposals for Lowton J&I involve enlarging the school and co-locating it with a new secondary school on the Lowton Civic Hall site. The admissions capacity of the school will be increased from 119 pupils to 210, which equates to 30 pupils per year group.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet has given the go ahead to progress these proposals and regular updates will be given as the Wigan Schools for the Future programme progresses.

The story so far:

May 2009 – Stage one consultation on Wigan Council’s proposals to build a new primary school replacing Lowton J&I and Leigh Gilded Hollins and form a new primary school begins.

July 2009 – Cabinet decides not to proceed with plans to discontinue Leigh Gilded Hollins Primary and form a new primary school with Lowton J&I and requests that consultation begins on the enlargement of Lowton J&I.

September 2009 – Consultation begins on the enlargement of Lowton J&I and plans to rebuild the school on the same site as the proposed new secondary school.

December 2009 – Cabinet decides to progress the consultation on the enlargement of Lowton J&I to the next stage.

January 2010 – the statutory notice to enlarge Lowton J&I is published on 14 January and a 4-week representation period followed.

March 2010 – Wigan Council’s Cabinet agree to progress proposals to enlarge Lowton J&I on the Lowton Civic Hall site.

Plans are subject to planning and funding approval and consultation will begin on the design of the school with key stakeholders in the near future.
