Phase 1 - Hindley High School

Our proposal is to rebuild Hindley High school and make it larger so that it can cater for young people that live in Hindley, Hindley Green, Bickershaw and Abram.

The reasons for this are:

  • The school buildings are currently in a poor condition;
  • The internal layout of the school hinders the delivery of a 21st century, modern curriculum;
  • The admissions number of the school needs to be increased – the school’s current admissions number is 187 (935 students) and this needs to be increased to 225 (1,125 students) in order to provide enough places for those living in the proposed catchment area in the future.

The school will be rebuilt and a new admissions number of 225 will apply from September 2012.

Details of the plans and design for the school will be given in the near future. We will provide further updates as the Wigan Schools for the Future programme progresses.

The story so far:

July 2009 – The results of the Stage one consultation are presented to Wigan Council’s Cabinet. The Cabinet give the go ahead to proceed to the next stage of consultation.

September 2009 – Statutory notices are published to increase the admission number of the school. A four-week representation period follows.
