What is BSF?

Building Schools for the Future (BSF) is the largest single capital investment programme in 50 years.

BSF will provide world-class teaching and learning environments for all pupils, teachers and communities in England.

It will see every state secondary school in England - around 3,500 in total - rebuilt or remodelled over the lifetime of the programme and nearly a third of all secondary schools in England are now involved with the programme.

The aim of the programme is to transform schools into world-class learning environments that will raise aspirations and enable future generations of young people to achieve their full potential.

Pathfinder High School Pathfinder High School

Launched by the Department for Education & Skills in February 2003, BSF is the largest and most ambitious scheme of its kind anywhere in the world. It will transform education and help improve the life chances of some 3.3 million students aged 11-19.

The programme will change the way that secondary schools function, by developing buildings fit for the 21st century and providing educational transformation programmes.

BSF is not just about bricks and mortar: it is about people. It is about transforming the face of education for generations to come, providing learning environments in which every young person can achieve their very best, no matter what their background.

BSF will:

  • Create learning environments which inspire all young people to achieve and reach their full potential;
  • Encourage a more strategic approach to funding, design, procurement and management of school buildings;
  • Ensure that students, teachers, parents and the local community have a say in the design of new facilities, so that they meet the needs of users;
  • Ensure that all new school buildings are built with sustainable features that protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions;
  • Help to reduce bullying and other anti-social behaviour by good quality and thoughtful design;
  • Provide schools with the latest ICT - technology and ensure all pupils have access to the latest ICT facilities, which will play a key role in helping to achieve educational transformation;
  • Provide teachers with flexible work spaces suited to modern curriculum requirements;
  • Provide access to facilities that can be used by members of the local community.
