Buildings and the Children and Young People's Plan

The Children and Young People’s Plan is a blueprint for improving the lives all children and young people in our borough.

The plan is centred on meeting five key outcomes for every child and young person. These are:

  • being healthy;
  • staying safe;
  • enjoying and achieving;
  • making a positive contribution; and
  • achieving economic well-being.

Each outcome has been sub-categorised into several strategic priorities which essentially describe the key objectives of the plan. The table below demonstrates the impact of school buildings on at least one strategic priority in each of the five outcomes.

CYPP outcome Strategic priority Impact of school buildings
Be Healthy BH1E: The overall fitness of children and young people is improved. Suitable PE spaces, playing fields and dining facilities increase the opportunities for children and young people to engage in sporting activities, promotes healthy eating and thus encourages a healthier lifestyle.
Staying Safe SS2B: All children and young people have access to safe areas in which to engage in leisure activities. Suitable, safe and secure informal and social areas on school grounds provide safe places for children and young people to engage in leisure activities and play.
Enjoy and Achieve EA3C: Children and young people are not disadvantaged in their education by the educational setting they attend or the area in which they live. The design, suitability and condition of school buildings promote excellent teaching and learning. Capital investments in buildings across the whole borough will ensure that all children and young people will be inspired to achieve and enjoy.
Enjoy and Achieve EA3F: The diversity of provision for young people 14-19 is increased in order to engage a greater number and provide pathways into further learning. Building Schools for the Future and other capital programmes will ensure that all young people aged 14-19 will continue to have access to a range of school places that meet their individual needs and chosen learning pathway.
Enjoy and Achieve EA3H: All children and young people attend educational settings, which are viable, inclusive and cost effective. Our reviews and on-going reorganisation of school places will ensure that all children and young people will have access to sustainable high quality schools.
Make a positive contribution PC4A: Children and young people are able to influence decisions that affect their lives as a member of their community. Formal and informal consultations about school places will ensure that all children and young people as well as other stakeholders will be able to influence changes in service provision.
Achieve economic well being EW5A: Ensure young people develop key transition and employability skills to enable them to make a successful transition to working life. We will ensure each secondary school has appropriate facilities to deliver its chosen specialism or diploma, as well as continuing to offer traditional academic studies. These learning pathways will help prepare young people for transition to adult life.
Achieve economic well being EW5D: Close the gap between the participation and attainment in lifelong learning of young people from vulnerable groups and the population of young people as a whole. In remodelling and redesigning schools, we will incorporate features that are specific to the needs of local children and the community.
