Welcome to Wigan local authorities site. Our aim is to provide the necessary information to Newly Qualified Teachers and Induction Tutors, required to successfully complete induction. On this site, you will find accessible advice and guidance as well as access to a variety of forms useful in completing induction.
Induction
The Induction period follows initial teacher training and the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) and must be undertaken by NQTs who wish to continue teaching in maintained schools. During the induction period NQTs must demonstrate they continue to meet the standards for the award of QTS, and meet the core standards of induction. Induction lasts for the equivalent of three school terms. These induction arrangements apply to anyone awarded QTS statue by whatever route from May 1999 onwards.
Each NQT will have an individualised programme of support during their induction year from a designated induction tutor within their school. Support will include observations of other teachers, training and a professional review of progress at least every half term. The head teacher and the council are jointly responsible for ensuring that NQT posts are suitable, (for instance, NQTs will receive a reduced timetable) and that their duties, supervision, personal development and the conditions under which they work are such that a fair and effective assessment of their performance against the core standards can be made.
At the end of the third term, the head teacher will make a final recommendation as to whether the teacher has met or not met the core standards and maintained the QTS standards. The council will make the final decision and there is a right of appeal to the General Teaching Council for England.
