Welcome to Wigan local authorities site. Our aim is to provide the necessary information to Newly Qualified Teachers and Induction Tutors, required to successfully complete induction. On this site, you will find accessible advice and guidance as well as access to a variety of forms useful in completing induction. The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has ceased operations.
From 1 April 2012, the Teaching Agency , a new executive agency of the Department for Education (DfE) (external link), will be the body responsible for the following activities in England:
- The award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- The issue of induction certificates
- Hearing induction appeals
- The regulation of the teaching profession
The Induction period follows initial teacher training and the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) and must be undertaken by NQTs who wish to continue teaching in maintained schools. During the induction period NQTs must demonstrate they continue to meet the standards for the award of QTS, and meet the teachers' standards of induction. Induction lasts for the equivalent of three school terms.
Each NQT will have an individualised programme of support during their induction year from a designated induction tutor within their school. Support will include observations of other teachers, training and a professional review of progress at least every half term. The head teacher and the council are jointly responsible for ensuring that NQT posts are suitable, (for instance, NQTs will receive a reduced timetable) and that their duties, supervision, personal development and the conditions under which they work are such that a fair and effective assessment of their performance against the teachers' standards can be made.
At the end of the third term, the head teacher will make a final recommendation as to whether the teacher has met or not met the teachers' standards and maintained the QTS standards. The council will make the final decision and there is a right of appeal to the Teaching Agency.
Sharon Adams is the named contact for Wigan with whom NQTs can raise issues about induction that have not or cannot be resolved within the school. Please contact Sharon Adams or the NQT Induction Team at TLCMB@wigan.gov.uk
Registration of NQTs with the council
When registering a newly appointed NQT, the HR Customer Service Centre requires notification, which includes the collection and transfer of data required by the Department for Education and the Teaching Agency. firstname.lastname@example.org
NQT Induction Team
The NQT Induction Team receives copies of the assessment forms submitted by schools following formal review meetings with their NQTs and arranges for the decisions of the LEA to be communicated to the The Teaching Agency and the Secretary of State. Learninganddevelopment@wigan.gov.uk
