New Governor Training

Governor Services run induction courses for new Governors.  The aims of these sessions are to improve your knowledge of schools and governance and to give you greater confidence in the role you have agreed to undertake.  You will also get an opportunity to meet with other recently appointed Governors from the across the borough who will share your expectations and concerns.We hope you will join us at these informal sessions!
  • New Governor Training is split into three sessions.

Session 1 will:

  • Explain the characteristics of effective governors
  • Define the local and national context within which schools operate
  • Explain the purpose and key roles of governing bodies

Session 2 will:

  • Identify the key element of the strategic role
  • Define the powers and duties of the governing body
  • Help you participate more confidently in governors meetings

Session 3 will:

  • Explain the role of the 'critical friend'
  • Help you to understand the governors role in monitoring and evaluation
  • Identify ways to ensure that governors visits to school are productive
