Audience:  Improving the Educational Attainment of Children in Care

These children are no less able than their peers but often underachieve. Their lives are often characterised by instability and many spend too much time out of school. They fall behind with school work and often do not receive the help and support they need to catch up.

The aims of this course are:

  • To gain an understanding of the requirements of the 2009 Statutory Guidance for School Governing Bodies regarding children in care
  • To raise awareness of the educational outcomes of children in care
  • To gain an understanding of the difficulties experienced by children in care which may affect their educational progress
  • To inform you of your role to support children in care

By the end of the session you should:

  • Understand the legal requirements and be able to support your Governing Body in fully implementing actions for children in care
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the Designated Teacher for children in care and be able to evaluate the best way for this role to be carried out in your school
  • Be able to evaluate the school’s systems and approaches to maintaining and improving educational outcomes for children in care
