Extended Learning

Definition of an extended school “An extended school is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children and young people to achieve their potential, and therefore decides to work in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children and young people, and with the local community”. (DfES 2004)
By 2010 all parents of primary aged children will be able to have access to affordable childcare in or through their school.  Childcare will be available from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round.  By 2010 all secondary schools will be open from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round.  Schools will offer a range of activities for young people.  Many schools are already providing these extended services and have been doing so for some time.  Schools will be able to develop the services which best meet the needs of their community.  They will be able to do this by consulting with parents and involving them in planning.
