Extended Learning

Definition of an extended school “An extended school is a school that recognises that it cannot work alone in helping children and young people to achieve their potential, and therefore decides to work in partnership with other agencies that have an interest in outcomes for children and young people, and with the local community”. (DfES 2004)

By 2010 all parents of primary aged children will be able to have access to affordable childcare in or through their school.  Childcare will be available from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round.  By 2010 all secondary schools will be open from 8:00am to 6:00pm all year round.  Schools will offer a range of activities for young people.  Many schools are already providing these extended services and have been doing so for some time.  Schools will be able to develop the services which best meet the needs of their community.  They will be able to do this by consulting with parents and involving them in planning.

Quality Development Programme

The Authority received £20K from the DfES through the QDP to promote Study Support within the Core Offer and to raise the profile of Study Support both within the CYPS and in schools.

The documents were produced to help schools and organisations in the development, monitoring and evaluation of Study Support activities against SEF’s, CYPP, the Core Offer and Every Child Matters.

The two documents are called:

‘Are you meeting your Study Support needs?’ targeted at educational professionals, head teachers and other authorities, to promote the huge variety of effective and well run Out Of School Hours activity within the borough. It also acknowledges the positive effect such activities have on those who attend by collating all the evidence generated both nationally and locally.  Are you meeting your Study Support needs? (.pdf, 532kb).

‘The Impact of Out Of School Hours Learning’ targeted at those people within schools and other organisations that have the challenge of planning and implementing study support activities within their school or organisation. It is intended as a solid starting point for the evaluation of the effectiveness of OOSHL and provides some useful resources to assist in this process. The Impact of Out Of School Hours Learning’ (.pdf, 595kb)The Evaluation Factor (.pdf, 1460kb)

Two conferences were held to show case and launch the documents which proved to be very successful. It is hoped that all schools will receive a copy and put them to good use.
