A protocol has been agreed by Secondary Headteachers which enables pupils at risk of permanent exclusion to be transferred to another school for a fresh start. These moves are called Supported Transfers (Community Sector) or Managed Placements (Aided Sector). They give a pupil an opportunity to develop new relationships and can have a positive impact on a child's progress.
Supported transfers/managed placements are recommended by the Department for Children, Schools and Families as an alternative to permanent exclusion. They can be used when a pupil is in danger of being permanently excluded for persisitent disruptive behaviour or following a 'one off serious offence'.
Trial placements in cases of persistent disruptive behaviour in the community sector usually last 6 weeks, after which the placement will be reviewed to determine whether it has been successful.
Benefits of a Supported Transfer
Continued access a mainstream curricullum, thereby enhancing future life chances.
- Pupil does not need to be admitted to a Pupil Referral Unit
- Additional support provided in new school means that placement is more likely to be successful.
