The Local Authority has a legal responsibility to provide education for and to promote, the regular attendance of, all children of compulsory school age.
The Local Authority employs Attendance Enforcement Officers to carry out its legal responsibilities in connection with school attendance. Attendance Enforcement Officers are employed in order to:
- reduce non-attendance and provide a response to the welfare needs of pupils and their families;
Schools have a statutory responsibility to record and monitor the punctuality and attendance of pupils for both the morning and the afternoon sessions.
Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure that their children attend school regularly, and stay in school for every lesson, after they have registered.
