If your child will turn 11 between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 he or she will transfer to secondary school at the start of the new school year in September 2010.
You should make your application to the local authority in which you live.
Application packs will be provided to pupils who live in Wigan authority from 11 September 2009:
- by the child’s primary school if they go to a Wigan primary school; or
- by post from the Director of Children and Young People's Services if the child does not go to a Wigan primary school.
The closing date for applications is 23 October 2009.
By law, we must use the 'equal preference' system when considering your application for a school place.

Voluntary Aided (Church) Schools
If any of your preferred schools is a voluntary-aided (church) school, you are strongly advised to fill in the school's own supplementary information form as well at the Wigan Council seconday school application form. You can get a copy of the supplementary form from the school, download the supplementary form from our website, or by contacting the School Places Team. Applications for places at Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Liverpool
The following information is important if you are stating a preference for any of the following schools:
- St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School
- St John Fisher Catholic High School
- St Mary’s Catholic High School
- St Peter’s Catholic High School
The definition of ‘baptised Catholic’ is contained in the explanatory notes section of each school’s admission policy. From the start of the 2010-11 academic year the following change is to be made to the school’s admission policy and applied wherever there is a reference to ‘baptised Catholic’ in the priority criteria:
Baptised Catholic: means, within the policies and practices relating to school admissions, any child who, before the due date of application, is a baptised Catholic or who, having been baptised into another Christian denomination whose baptisms are recognised by the Catholic Church, has subsequently been formally received into the Catholic Church.
