Support for Students with SEN at 16+

People experience many changes or transitions through their lives, however, the most significant transition we all have to go through is that from childhood to adulthood. In the case of people with a learning difficulty or disability this can be a time when additional support is required to assist them in achieving their ambitions and aspirations. Most young people experience problems during this time, but for those with learning difficulties or disabilities there are likely to be additional challenges.

The role of the Local Authority is one of co-ordination, with much of the actual practical planning being carried out through the work that goes on in schools. Planning for the transition of young people with a Statement of SEN, whether in special or mainstream schools, begins no later than the age of 14. It is the Local Authority’s Access and Inclusion Team who will work with schools, at this time, to ensure a smooth and supported transition from school into whatever is the desired option for the young person, eg local college, supported employment/training, specialist residential college, etc. If a young person leaves school at 16, and goes to college, their Statement will cease. However, should they transfer into extended education arranged by the LEA, the Statement will stay in place until the age of 19.

Wigan’s Children & Young People’s Connexions Service also offers advice, guidance and support to those young people with learning difficulties and /or disabilities between the ages of 13 and 25 years
