The service consists of Educational Psychologists and clerical support staff, employed by Wigan MBC.
All Educational Psychologists have a background in psychology, education and knowledge of a wide range of psychological approaches to help young people progress.
We work with children/young people(aged 0-19 years, 16-19 if in local authority schools), their carers/parents, settings and the local authority.
Support, and advice is offered to support young people/children to enable academic progress, positive mental health, and to achieve further personal and social development.
This occurs via:-
- Consultation with school/setting staff
- Consultation with parents/carers
- Direct 1:1 work and observation of young people
- Work with other professionals
- Work with whole classes/groups
- Work with whole settings
- Work within the local authority
Educational Psychologists also work with the Primary Child Mental Health Team.
Consultation records/reports
If a report or consultation record is written on a child/young person carer/parent will normally be sent a copy. Parents/carers can ask to look at any information held on their child, as can young people if old enough to make a reasoned judgement.
Before any direct involvement can occur parents/carers and young people(if old enough) have to agree to this by signing a form.
If a statutory assessment of SEN is to occur Educational Psychologists provide a written report as part of the process.
Access to the Service
The service delegates as much time as possible to schools and the early years. Work is planned by regular planning meetings. Therefore any enquiries about EP involvement from outside the school/early years inclusion team is brought to these meetings to be prioritised. If a parent/carer wishes to contact the service the best route is to discuss this with the SENCo at your school or early years setting.
