This long-established team is committed to providing quality activities and experiences for young people across the borough that help them learn about work, through work, for work.We have recently received recognition of our outstanding achievements with a Quality Award from the National EBP Network.Wigan Education Business Partnership is part of the Engagement Branch of Children & Young People’s Services and is funded by the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) and the Learning & Skills Network (LSN). In addition to the support we receive from Wigan Council, the LSC and the LSN, we are fortunate to have the skills, resources and commitment provided by our many business and agency partners.Wigan EBP Team take a proactive approach to enhancing the employability skills of the young people of Wigan and some of the programmes and activities we deliver are detailed below.
Work Experience
Together with our business partners, Wigan EBP offers a two-week work experience for every student in the Wigan Borough. This means that we organise around 4000 work placements in each year.
Placements are undertaken either in Year 10 or 11 and provide students with a valuable insight into the work of work, allowing them to develop their key skills, work with others and give them a deeper understanding of their chosen employment area.
Wigan EBP also arranges around 200 extended placements in each year for students following more structured programmes such as NVQs or vocational GCSEs. These are tailored to match individual student needs. It is anticipated that, with the advent of the new Specialised Diplomas in 2008, demand for extended placements within the various employment areas will increase greatly and the EBP team are ready to meet the challenge of engaging our existing business partners and recruiting new businesses to meet the demand.
