The Traveller Education Team supports children from Traveller families in accessing education whilst in the Wigan area, working in partnership with schools, teachers and parents to identify and focus on the specific needs of Traveller Children.
Support is available for all Traveller children and their families accessing educational opportunities. We also provide support for the schools enrolling Traveller pupils and their staff.
Support may take form of :
- Support for the enrolment and induction of Traveller pupils into school;
- Support for schools and families in maintaining Traveller pupils' attendance;
- Advice and support for school staff with materials and strategies for working with Traveller pupils;
- Additional teaching support, where appropriate;
- In-service training and education about aspects of Traveller culture;
- Support for the development of distance learning packages when children and their families are travelling.
Anyone can refer a child or young person by contacting the Team Co-ordinator by phone, fax or e-mail. All schools when approached by Traveller families seeking school places should refer to the Traveller Education Team. Where a member of the Traveller Education Team visits the school regularly new children can be referred to them directly.
All children referred to the Team will have an initial assessment of their learning needs leading to a package of support where appropriate.
