Ethnic Minority Achievement

This Service is made up of two education support teams, English As an Additional Language Team and Traveller Education Team, providing support to children and young people of black and minority ethnic heritage. Support for ethnic minority pupils in Wigan is provided from within the Wigan Eduction Support Services, part of the Children & Young People's Services Learning and Attainment Branch.Asylum Seeker and other pupils whose home language is not English are supported by the English As An Additional Language Team. Traveller children are supported by the Traveller Education Team.

English as an Additional Language Team

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Team provides support for the education of children newly arrived in the country and other children and young people whose home language is not English.

Support is available for all pupils for whom English is not the language of home, both those newly arrived in this country and those born here. This could include children of asylum seekers, refugees and European migrants enrolled in school and other ethnic minority pupils experiencing difficulty as a result of their language background. We also provide support to schools enrolling pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Traveller Education Team

The Traveller Education Team supports children from Traveller families in accessing education whilst in the Wigan area, working in partnership with schools, teachers and parents to identify and focus on the specific needs of Traveller Children.

Support is available for all Traveller children and their families accessing educational opportunities. We also provide support for the schools enrolling Traveller pupils and their staff.
