Through everyday, fun and interesting experiences which reflect children’s interests, ECAT encourages early language development right from the outset, extending children’s vocabulary so that before they start school children are confident and skilled communicators.
In Wigan we are working with 26 ECAT settings. These include maintained Nursery Classes, Children’s Centres, Private Day Nurseries, Pre Schools and Play Groups. Each ECAT setting has a nominated Early Language Lead Practitioner (ELLP) with the responsibility for developing practice within their setting.
Getting Started
The first step of the ECAT programme is to undertake an audit of current language provision in the setting.
A practical based audit can be found on p7 – 22 of the first ELLP guidance file.
The audit helps practitioners consider:
- How the setting supports the unique speech, language and communication skills of every child
- How frequently interactions between staff and children support the children’s speech, language and communication.
- How the environment supports the speech, language and communication development of the children.
- How the activities and routines of the settings support the speech, language and communication of children throughout the day.
Once the audit activities have been completed settings complete an action plan.
Monitoring Children’s Progress
A crucial element of the ECAT programme is the monitoring of children’s progress against typical stages of speech, language and communication development in 4 key aspects:
- Listening
- Understanding
- Talking
- Social Communication

Useful Tools
Practitioners in ECAT settings have been using a range of tools to reflect on current practice.
- Unique Child: enables practitioners to consider what opportunities are available to encourage children’s talk
- Positive Relationships: encourages practitioners to carry out and reflect on peer observations regarding adult : child interaction
- Enabling Environments: support practitioners to create a communication friendly environment
- Learning and Development: considers strategies and routines to ensure children are offered the best opportunities to talk
