Improving Quality in Early Years

The Early Years Quality and Inclusion Team work closely with all providers to support them in developing high quality, inclusive provision. This will support each child to stay safe and healthy, experience enjoyment and achievement in their learning and development and make a positive contribution to society.

Improving and assuring quality is achieved through a clear focus on positive impact and outcomes for young children and their families. There are a number of strands to the work, some examples are listed below:

  • Strand of Work : Wigan Quality Standard

    Description: A locally developed quality assurance scheme, nationally endorsed under Investors in Children. All providers of Early Education and Care (including Out of School Clubs) are encouraged to participate in this scheme, which provides a systematic framework for evaluating and developing provision.

    Outcome: Quality provision designed and delivered around the needs of children and families accessing the service.

  • Strand of work: Early Years Advisory Teachers, Quality Assurance, and Inclusion Workers

    Description: Qualified Teachers and Child Care Workers whose role is to provide support and challenge across the maintained, private and voluntary sectors, through regular focussed visitsand the implementation of a comprehensive training programme.

    Outcome: Improved outcomes for children evidenced through the Foundation Stage Profile; improved OFSTED inspection outcomes for settings, reflecting high quality, inclusive provision for children and families.

  • Strand of work: Early Years Projects

    Description: Locally developed projects focussed on promoting the learning and developing of young children

    Outcome: Improved outcomes for children, evidenced through the Foundation Stage Profile

  • Strand of work: Children's Centre Qualified Teachers

    Description: Part of the core offer of all children's centres. The role of the qualified teachers, in addition to the delivery of Early education within the children's centre, is to ensure that other services offered within the centre and it's reach, impact on children's development.

    Outcome: Improved outcomes for children, evidenced through the Foundation Stage Profile
