The law says that any children/young people taking part in a performance should be supervised and well cared for at all times. If parents are unavailable to care for their child personally, a chaperone must be used. Sometimes chaperones are called matrons.
A chaperone is an adult approved by a Local Authority to look after children during the course of a performance, including travel to and from the event.
The law says that a chaperone must:
- be suitable to look after children/young people
- look after no more than 12 children/young people at any one time
- not be asked to undertake any other duties whilst acting as a chaperone
- follow the correct procedures if the child/young person becomes ill, suffers an injury or becomes upset
- exercise proper supervision and ensure that children/young people have adequate rest, meals and recreation breaks
- accompany children to and from the dressing rooms
- stay on the set all the time the child/young person is there
Allegations of Abuse
If a child/young person ever discloses any details of physical or sexual abuse you cannot keep this information to yourself. It must be immediately reported to both the licensing authority and the police.
