The 1996 Education Act imposes a duty on parents and guardians of children of statutory school age (5-16) to secure "efficient full time education suitable:
-
to his/her age, ability and aptitude, and
-
to any special educational needs he/she may have."
This can be done at school or "…otherwise".
For most children this means that they will go to school, however for various reasons a number of parents / carers choose to undertake the responsibility of educating their child(ren) outside the school system. If you are considering home education as a result of issues in school, such as bullying, please contact the Pupil Referral Service Central Team on the number below who can offer advice and guidance.
Choosing to educate your child(ren) at home is a difficult decision and sometimes parents / carers realise it is not the experience they or the child(ren) were expecting. Wigan Council Children and Young People's Services have produced the documents below to provide advice and guidance on elective home education.
Parents / carers who elect to home educate are not required to follow the National Curriculum and can structure learning in a way that is convenient to them and the child(ren). Information on the National Curriculum can be obtained by contacting the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency on 0300 303 3011.
Wigan Children & Young People’s Services do not have any funds available to support families who choose to home educate and parents / carers will assume full financial responsibility. This also includes entering your child(ren) in for examinations, ie, GCSE's as external candidates.
