Accessibility

Wigan Council takes seriously the issue of access for the disabled and ensuring accessibility for all on our web site is important to our commitment.

To ensure that we meet the highest standards of access for all we actively test and modify our pages to meet the required government level of accessibility, tested against the Web Accessibility Initiative recommendations as published by the World Wide Web Consortium.

We aim to meet all priority 1 and 2 checkpoints within the WAI recommendations on all our pages.

When we implemented this web site we revised and restructured the design to enable a dramatic improvement in the level of accessibility compliance across the site.

Our web site had been designed with the following accessibility features. We:

  • Use alternate text for images where appropriate, to help the visually impaired,
  • Use a high contrast default design for legibility,
  • Have a super high contrast, inverse, large text alternate design for the visually impaired,
  • Allow users to resize text to allow a comfortable reading size, using either their browser controls or controls on the web page,
  • Use style sheets that can be overridden by the user in some web browsers,
  • Are Browsealoud (external link) enabled, allowing users to have our web site read aloud by the free Browsealoud (external link) software.
