Sexual Orientation

Unlawful sexual orientation discrimination happens when someone is treated less favourably due to their sexual orientation, their perceived sexual orientation, or the sexual orientation of those they associate with.

Your sexual orientation means the general attraction you feel towards people of one sex or another (or both). Most people are generally attracted to:

  • people who are the same sex as them (homosexuality),
  • people who are the opposite sex to them (heterosexuality),
  • or people of both sexes (bisexuality).

Worker Forum

Wigan Council has its own Wigan Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Workers’ Forum (WLGBTF). The group meets once a month. The meetings are a closed forum for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Amongst other things the group aims to provide a two-way process for communication between staff and Wigan Council on their Equality and Diversity agenda, offer support and encouragement to employees who wish to join, raise people’s awareness and reduce discrimination, celebrate the contribution and diverse culture of LGBT people.
