Women, men and transgender people should not be treated unfairly because of their gender, because they are married or because they are raising a family. If people are treated unfairly for any of these reasons, this is sex discrimination. Legislation protects you from sex discrimination at work, in education, as a consumer and in public services.

Workers Forum
The Wigan, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Workers Forum meets monthly and its aims include:
- To provide a two-way process for communication between staff and Wigan Council on their Equality & Diversity agenda.
- Offer support and encouragement to employees.
- Ensure Wigan Council challenge and publicise inappropriate and outdated behaviour.
- Celebrate the contribution and diverse culture of LGBT people as an integral and valued constituent part of the general population.
- Raise people’s awareness and reduce discrimination within the workplace and service delivery.
- Create a safe environment that accepts and promotes difference and diversity.
- Ensure Wigan Council policies and procedures are actively inclusive to LBGT ideals.
