Equality & Diversity - Welcome

The elimination of discrimination, the promotion of community cohesion, social inclusion and valuing the diverse needs and skills of everyone are at the heart of the Borough’s as well as the Government’s agenda. These aims are critical to future economic and social development as well as being ethically right and socially just.

Age

Unlawful age discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without justification, or is harassed or victimised because of their age.

Class

For the purposes of the work of the Equality & Diversity Team we are using 'class' as an overarching framework to include multiple deprivation and social exclusion.

Disability

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 aims to end the discrimination that many disabled people face. It now gives disabled people rights in areas of:

  • Employment
  • Education
  • Access to goods, facilities and services
  • Buying or renting land or property, including making it easier for disabled people to rent property and for tenants to make disability-related adaptations

Gender

Women, men and transgender people should not be treated unfairly because of their gender, because they are married or because they are raising a family. If people are treated unfairly for any of these reasons, this is sex discrimination. Legislation protects you from sex discrimination at work, in education, as a consumer and in public services.

Religion or belief

Under anti-discrimination legislation you have the right to hold your own religious beliefs or other philosophical beliefs similar to a religion. You also have the right to have no religion or belief. It is unlawful for someone to discriminate against you because of your religion or belief in the following circumstances:

  • In any aspect of employment
  • When providing goods, facilities and services
  • When providing an education
  • In using or disposing of premises
  • When exercising public functions

Race

It is unlawful for a person to discriminate on racial grounds against another person. The law defines racial grounds as including race, colour, nationality or ethnic or national origins.

Sexual Orientation

Unlawful sexual orientation discrimination happens when someone is treated less favouorably due to their sexual orientation, their perceived sexual orientation, or the sexual orientation of those they associate with.
