Public Notice

Review of Polling districts, polling places and polling stations

Section 16 of the Electoral Administration Act 2006 requires all local authorities to review their polling districts, polling places and polling stations. This notice sets out the arrangements for Wigan Council’s review.

The Returning Officers for the Leigh, Makerfield, Wigan and Worsley parliamentary constituencies will prepare reports setting out their observations on electoral arrangements across the borough.

Electors within the borough of Wigan or any of the parliamentary constituencies set out above may make a representation on the electoral arrangements across the borough.

The Wigan People First Group will be consulted on access to polling stations for persons with any type of disability but any other person or body with expertise in this issue is welcome to submit representations.

Any persons or bodies making representations should, if possible, give details of suggested changes to polling district boundaries or alternative places that may be used as polling places. In particular, alternative proposals where the Council currently uses portable cabin accommodation at five locations would be welcomed.

Documents setting out the current electoral arrangements can be inspected at the following locations:-

  • The Elections Office, Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan;
  • Leigh Library, Turnpike Centre, Civic Square, Leigh
  • Ashton Library, Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan
  • Tyldesley Library, Stanley Street, Tyldesley, Manchester.

Alternatively, the documents can be viewed on the Council’s website (www.wigan.gov.uk).

Representations should be submitted before 5:00 pm on Monday 1 October 2007. Written representations should be sent to:-

The Chief Executive, Wigan Council, the Elections Office, Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan WN1 1YN.

Representation by email should be sent to elections@wigan.gov.uk.

Please note that, because Parliamentary constituency and local Ward boundaries are approved by a Parliamentary order, they cannot be changed as part of this review.

The Chief Executive will submit a report on the results of this review and consultation exercise to the Council at its meeting to be held on Wednesday 31 October 2007 so that the new Register of Electors to be published on 1 December 2007 can incorporate any alterations made to the electoral arrangements as a result.
