European Elections

The European Parliament is elected for a fixed term of five years.  The elections for the European Parliament are generally held in June, the next european election will be held on 4 June 2009.

Each Member State fixes its own election date within  the same period, starting on a Thursday morning and ending on the following Sunday evening.

In the UK, while voting and the verification of ballot papers takes place on the Thursday, the declaration of results cannot be undertaken until polling has finished throughout the EU on the following Sunday evening.

Immediately prior to an election the names of candidates will be available and after the results have been declared that information also.
