Wigan is the largest of Greater Manchester’s 10 boroughs, and we believe it has a great deal to offer people.
We live in a green place – over three quarters of the borough is open country, like parks and fields – and we’re at the heart of the North West, with first-class motorway and rail links.
There’s a great range of affordable private housing, as well as a large number of council homes which are benefiting from massive investment.
We have excellent public services and the Government has ranked us the joint highest-rated metropolitan council.
Crime levels are the lowest in Greater Manchester, and nine out of 10 young people leave school with at least one nationally recognised qualification.
But we still face high levels of need.
Fear of crime remains a big issue for local people, and one person in seven lives in a deprived area. One working-age adult in three has no qualifications, and local wages are low.
Life expectancy is improving but more slowly than in the rest of the country.
