Council Tax Collection Performance

The performance of all council's is monitored by the Government through the Audit Commission. The Audit Commission specifies performance indicators for each type of service and the council is obliged to provide the information which is then published by the Commission.

The information below shows how we performed in the collection of Council Tax and how we compare with the national average. For  more information on the performance of local authorities visit the Audit Commission's Website (External link).

2006/07 96.9% 95.3% 96.9%
2007/08 96.7% 95.6% 96.7%

Council Tax collection performance dipped slightly at the end of 2007/2008 compared to performance at the end of 2006/2007. The main reason is thought to be the general increases in the cost of living and household bills, including mortgage repayments, energy and fuel costs and food costs, and the impact of the 'credit crunch'. Recovery actions are on a par with those of last year and we are closely monitoring our collection performance to see whether the financial climate will impact on performance for 2008/2009.
