Welcome to the Business Support Service Department. The Department's role is to support other council departments in fulfilling their roles by providing them with Audit, Financial, Human Resource, IT and Printing, Legal and Property services.
The department has responsibility for the provision and maintenance of all financial services provided to, and on behalf of, the Authority. The accountancy section maintains all records required by law, and compiles annual estimates of income and expenditure which form the basis for levying local taxes.
The department is responsible for the collection of the Council Tax, the National Non-Domestic business rate and the payment of Housing Benefit. The department also deals with financial planning, loans, council investments, insurance, banking and security. It maintains and develops the Council's information technology and communications network, and the administration of the Council payroll.
The departments’ legal services service includes Common Law, Conveyancing and Asset Management and deals with references from the Local Government Ombudsman. These services are not only provided to the Council but also to the Greater Manchester Fire and Civil Defence Authority.
The department is responsible for the provision of the Land Charges Service and the custody of the Council's deeds and documents.
