Council Departments

Wigan Council is responsible for delivering local services in one of the country's biggest metropolitan boroughs. Management is shared between part-time councillors and full-time officers. Put simply, councillors decide policy; officers carry it out. Council departments have their headquarters in various buildings in or close to Wigan town centre, with other offices located throughout the borough.

Actually delivering the services are over 7,000 full and part-time employees (excluding teachers), across the following departments:

One step removed are Wigan & Leigh Housing, and Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust. These two organisations are not formally part of the council but manage services and facilities on behalf of it.
