Wigan has become one of just three councils in the country to be piloting a new welfare initiative that allows veterans, serving members of the armed forces and their families to receive help and support on everything from healthcare to housing and education and concessionary transport.
By making one phone call to Wigan Council (01942 244991) or the national telephone number (08000 223366), the borough’s armed forces community can access advice on what they are entitled to.
Veterans' champion Cllr Keith Cunliffe says: “We’re delighted that we will be at the front line of helping to deliver services to members of the armed forces community thanks to this joint initiative between local and central government. The council is immensely proud of the contribution of service men and women from the borough.”
