Sense of Sound… coming to Aspull.

Aspull is the place to be next month if you love singing. Wigan Community Choir’s all-day singing workshop will be led by members of the renowned ‘SENSE OF SOUND’ choir from Liverpool - exceptional singers who deliver soulful, rhythmic and experimental songs.

This cappella (singing without accompaniment) choir was a finalist in Radio 3’s Choir of the Year Competition in 2006, reached the final six choirs in last year’s BBC ‘Last Choir Standing’ and took part in the programme ‘The Choir’ with Gareth Malone.

The aim of the workshop, funded by the BBC Performing Arts Fund, is to help regular and new singers to move to the music, to learn new songs and to sing them in the unique ‘Sense of Sound’ style.

The event is on Saturday 24 April, 10am – 4pm, at Aspull Methodist Church. Early booking and payment is essential. The cost is £6 for the day (£4 concessions).

To join Wigan Community Choir come along to Aspull Methodist Church on Wednesday evenings (term time) 7 – 9pm. You don’t need to have sung before or read music. Cost is £4 per session. Contact Wigan Community Choir or phone 01942 824923

Time to salsa, swing and jive!

PUT on those dancing shoes as it’s almost time for the borough’s toe tapping dance celebration!

Learn to salsa, swing and jive your way through one of the borough’s most popular festivals – Dance Fusion.

L&L Superstars at the last Dance Fusion in 2008.

A week of dance workshops will be taking place throughout the borough from 15 to 21 May. The festival concludes with the Dance Fusion Showcase at Lowton Civic Hall on Saturday 22 May.

Organised through Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Arts and Festivals Team, in partnership with the Wigan and Leigh Dance Network, 2010 will be the fourth dance festival.

As well as having a one day dance extravaganza at Lowton Civic Hall the festival also includes a week jam packed with dance classes ranging from salsa, swing, jive, Scottish and street, suitable for all ages.

Throughout the week toddlers, children, teenagers, parents and grandparents can join in a wide range of dance classes all guaranteed to be packed with fitness and fun.

Vicky Fletcher, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Arts Development Officer, said:

“Dance is one of the leading arts activities in Wigan and Leigh, there is some fantastic talent out there and with the popularity of shows like Strictly Come Dancing we expect it to be another extremely well attended festival.”
