Currently there is no officially sanctioned access to this part of the woods and park – a gift to the town in 1914 from Lord Lilford - and the scheme will provide a good walking surface along the flood bank and back.
When complete it will provide a 2km footpath circuit through stunning countryside and a historic area with connections going back to the English Civil War.
Money has come from the three local councillors’ Brighter Borough fund, Wigan Council and the Environment Agency and the work is being done by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.
Improvements to a 1km stretch of footpath within Lilford Woods are already underway and should be completed by the spring. Access to the flood basin is scheduled for early summer.
