Nominate your Local Hero for Garden Party Invite

Have you ever wondered why that special person in your community never got recognised with a national honour or an invitation to a Palace garden party? The simple answer could well be that no-one nominated them.

Our region makes fewer nominations than any other part of the country, something that the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Warren Smith – the Queen’s personal representative in our county – wants to change.

Former GM chief constable and now deputy lieutenant Sir David Wilmot, believes that if we were to submit more nominations then more from our area would be recognised.

He said: “It’s disappointing when you hear about all the great things individuals do in our area that don’t get recognised. We seem to be reluctant to nominate them. Let’s change that as far as Wigan borough is concerned.”

To make a nomination phone the Lord Lieutenant’s office in Manchester (0161 834 0490) or go to their website Greater Manchester Lieutenancy Office (external link)

Further information about national honours can be obtained by writing to the Honours and Appointments Secretariat, Cabinet Office, 35 Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3BQ. Tel: 020 72762777 or email: Ceremonial - Cabinet Office

Community groups could also receive a Queen's Award for Voluntary Service if they have provided quality service in the community for at least 3 years and the majority of those involved are volunteers. Contact the Lord Lieutenant’s Office to make a nomination.
