Information...in Wigan its a Family Affair

There’s loads of information about the services available for children, young people and families in our borough – and it’s all there at the click of a mouse.

New kid on the block is the council’s Family Service directory.

This just-launched site is a great way for parents and carers to find out about hundreds of services that are available in the borough.

There are more than 650 different listings to sift through but the brains behind the new directory have made it easy to find what you want.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for Children and Young People, Cllr Susan Loudon, says: “We want to give parents and carers the power to find the information they need but we have made it really user-friendly. We also believe it will become a valuable tool for professionals such as teachers and youth workers.”

The Family Service directory – Wigan FIS (external link) - is online and ready to use now. And if you haven’t got a computer of your own you can pop down to your local library or Sure Start Children’s Centre and get online for free.

Meanwhile, a website aimed at 13-19 year olds has reached a major milestone.

Check out The LINC

For the first time since it launched in 2005, the LINC Online, a dedicated website packed full of positive activities for young people, attracted more than one million page views in a single year.

The site is maintained by the youth information team at Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust, and works in partnership with the council's youth service.

Chris Skoyles, who runs the website within the youth information team, said:

“There’s a wealth of positive activities in Wigan borough for young people and I’m glad that, through the continued success of The LINC Online, more and more people are able to find out about them and get involved.”

The LINC Online is updated weekly and contains a dedicated Things to Do section with details of over 150 regular clubs and activities, weekly guides to activities during school holidays, links to local support services for young people and much more.

Young people themselves can also contribute to the website and are encouraged to submit articles. Check it out at LINC Online (external link)
