An average £300 loan taken out last Christmas cost some families a staggering £800 to repay, according to housing provider Circle Anglia.
Now Welcome Credit Union – a not for profit financial cooperative – has a new account that will help you spread the cost throughout the year.
Welcome, like the borough's other credit union Unify, offers safe and secure savings and is regulated by the Financial Services Authority.
It also has access to help from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
You can contact Welcome on 01942 828702 on Mondays (12-6), Wednesdays (10-4) and Thursdays (10-2).
There are free information sessions at the Queens Hall, Wigan on Mondays from 10am to 12pm or Leigh Library on Fridays at the same time.
For savers there are collection points at:
- One Voice in Scholes Precinct (Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri 10am – 3pm; Sat 10am – 12pm)
- Aspull library (Thurs 10am – 12pm)
- Age Concern, Market St, Wigan (Thurs 10am – 12pm)
