Breaks Transformed for Disabled Children

A national programme to support disabled children is helping to change the lives of local families.

Wigan Council has been awarded government money to transform short breaks for children and young people with disabilities through a programme known as Aiming High.

Kelly Piper, senior schemes coordinator, explains: “Parents told us that a really important thing for them and their children was the availability of short breaks. Children who have the greatest need for them often seemed unable to access services because of challenges posed by their disability.

“The money that Wigan has received has enabled us to transform short breaks, giving parents a chance to recharge their batteries while being a stimulating and fun experience for the young people.”

Some of the money has paid for equipment and adaptations to make it easier for children with disabilities to use Low Bank Ground outdoor education centre in the Lake District and the borough’s local swimming pools.

With the help of generous private sector funding a holiday lodge was also purchased at Ribby Hall Caravan Park near Blackpool.

This year there are plans to build a number of radar-key controlled hygiene suites in strategic positions across the borough and a fully equipped sensory suite.
