Rose Bridge High School pupils Emily Holleron, Ashley Cassidy, Becki Landi, Jodie Shalcross and Ashley Fearns jump for joy at their GCSE results.

Wigan celebrated another bumper crop of GCSEs this year with secondary school pupils posting a record-breaking set of results.

Recently confirmed figures show that nearly half of all pupils who took their exams this year came away with the magic five A* to C grades, including English and Maths.

Last year 46 per cent of pupils achieved this grade compared to 49.5 per cent this year.

Just over 70 per cent achieved five A* to C grades in all subjects compared to 66 per cent last year.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for Children and Young People, Cllr Susan Loudon, says: “These results are entirely deserved and are a testament not only to the hard work and dedication of our young people but to our schools and everyone who works with children and young people in our borough.

“The council has pledged to improve prospects and opportunities for children and young people and results such as this show we are delivering on this promise.”
