All over Wigan borough there are unsung heroes – individuals, groups, teams and organisations – whose work improves the quality of life and well-being of local people, and who collectively make the borough a better place for all of us.
Alan Stephenson, Chair of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan NHS says: “These community champions deserve recognition – and you can make that happen.”
Anyone, or any organisation, can be nominated in the categories below.
Ambassador for Wigan Borough
– an individual who has helped to give Wigan borough a positive profile and improve its reputation.
Business contribution to the community
– businesses whose philosophy and actions contribute to the well-being of the community, for example by supporting community groups or projects.
Children’s Champion
– individuals or groups who make children’s lives and/or education better.
Garrett Hall Eco-School
Eco-school
– schools that demonstrate, through education and direct action, their commitment to the environment.
Good Neighbour
– somebody who goes out their way simply to be a ‘good neighbour’.
Green and Glorious
– individuals or groups that have been responsible for a great community clean-up or local environmental project.
Health and well being award for professionals
– public sector employees who have made a significant contribution to improving people’s quality of life.
Healthy school
– schools that demonstrate outstanding efforts to improve the health of pupils, staff and the whole school community.
Life Changing
– people who have turned their lives around or who have helped others to do so.
Partnership award
– two or more organisations who have worked together to make lives better.
Sports Personality of the Year
– sporting role models whose efforts can inspire others to ‘get active’.
Volunteer or volunteers of the Year
– individuals or groups who work to improve the lives of others.
Young Citizen of the Year
– people 18 and under who have helped others or their community.
A nomination form can be found in the paper copy of the Borough Life magazine or, alternatively, you can make your nomination online at WiganLife (external link). Competition terms and conditions (including our complicity with the Data Protection Act 1998) are also available online. Closing date for nominations is 8th January. They will be judged by members of the Wigan Borough Partnership and a presentation ceremony will take place in early Spring.
