They Love Wigan: Amy Atkins and manager Sophie Gardiner with a selection of the souvenirs on sale at the TIC.

From Wigan Monopoly to Wigan Lingo t-shirts and Love Wigan gifts there’s plenty of stocking fillers to choose from. But there’s one ornament that isn’t for sale!

The TIC team were named best in the North West, picking up a stunning glass trophy in October at an awards ceremony at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. They beat off tough competition from St Helens, Congleton, Cleveleys and Coniston to win the tourism “oscar”.

Sophie Gardiner, tourist information manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “Like any business, success starts with a belief in your product and for us that’s Wigan.

“We’re all proud to live and work in the borough and that shines through. We are thrilled to have been named the best in the North West.”

The TIC, in Wallgate opposite Wigan North Western station, is the place to find out all things tourism and leisure.

They are official agents for TicketMaster, National Express, National Theatre Tokens and Superbreaks information and advice, travel and accommodation.

Cabinet champion for culture Cllr Brian Baldwin added: “This is a tremendous achievement. Tourism spending contributes £500m to the local economy with 12.2m visitors a year who can be sure that a smiling face is always ready to greet them at our tourist information centre.”

For a chance to win a free hamper of Wigan goodies call into the TIC and complete an entry form.
