Their designs are now being professionally printed and will be sent by the mayor and mayoress Mark and Karen Aldred and council leader Lord Smith as their official Christmas cards this year.

The cards will also be available to buy from Wigan and Leigh Town Halls and Wigan Tourist Information Centre, with all money raised going to the mayor’s charity appeal to improve local services for sufferers from dementia and meningitis.

The mayor said: “We had some cracking entries and it was a tough decision. But in the end we’ve got three great designs which I will be proud to send to everyone on the mayoral Christmas card list.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took the trouble to enter – it’s a pity we couldn’t have picked more!”

The winners:

9 year old Rebecca Ashurst from 2nd Tyldesley Brownies was the winner in the under 13s category with a delightful picture of Mary and Joseph. The judges described it as ‘a well drawn traditional Christmas scene.’

Kate Webster from Billinge was voted the best entry in the 13-19 age group. Her photo of ducks on a chilly Mesnes Park lake, called ‘Winter Residents’, was praised as ‘an excellent photograph and very characteristic of the borough.’

In the over 19s category Jacqueline Walsh from Hindley won with a witty image of a mince pie wearing a Santa hat! The judges loved the way it ‘mixed tradition with humour’.

All three have won £100 of high street shopping vouchers.
