Neighbours are too noisy
Sir, – I live in a ground floor flat and my upstairs neighbours are very noisy drunkards. I don’t want to fall out with them but it’s mad at the weekends. They have young children who are screaming all the time. I like a drink but I have respect and am as quiet as I can be. What can I do? I have tried all ways to be as neighbourly as possible.

Ian Harrison, head of sustainable communities, said: “Anti social behaviour is distressing and no one should have to suffer it in silence. Our neighbourhood teams deal with all anti social behaviour complaints to the council working in partnership with the police and other organisations.
“We can tackle noise, intimidation, aggressive behaviour, drug related nuisance, litter, graffiti and racial harassment. In extreme cases the council will consider using professional witnesses when residents are too frightened to be named.”
Complaints can be reported by phone to a dedicated helpline, 01942 404021; by email to Neighbourhood Team; or in writing to Neighbourhood Teams, Sovereign Road Portacabins, Wilton Street, Wigan WN1 3AE.
Grid bangs get on nerves
Sir, – I hope you will print my letter about the grids in roads that constantly go bang bang bang every time a vehicle passes over them. The sound of these metal grids’ constant noise really gets on my nerves and I’m sure there must be other people who agree with me. Why does no one report them to councils?
Name and address supplied
If a grid has come loose you can report it to the council by contacting 01942 404364.
How everyone can help keep our borough tidy
The Friends of Douglas Valley show off bags of rubbish they collected after clearing the path alongside the 'Duggie' up to the entrance to Haigh Plantations.
Sir, – I would add my heartfelt thanks for the wonderful and very impressive floral displays mounted on railings throughout the borough.
They are a credit to Wigan. It would be wonderful if more time or money were to be expended on litter collection and removal. Your notion of volunteers is to be applauded – it would be good to get schoolchildren and perhaps the uniformed organisations to be involved.
I personally take a few supermarket bags (and a rubber glove!) whenever I walk a dog across the footpaths and open areas of Lowton.
I can guarantee to fill 8 such bags during any weekend. But there are parts I can’t manage although young people (I’m 71) in wellingtons would find no difficulty!
A Benn, Lowton
Volunteers (like the Friends of Douglas Valley, pictured), uniformed organisations and dedicated citizens like A Benn provide a huge help to the council when it comes to keeping our borough clean and tidy. If you want to get involved call the environmental education team on 01942 488222 or email Nick Burdekin
Was bike site letter just published to test reaction?
Sir, – I was stunned to read the autumn 2009 edition’s letter encouraging Three Sisters to become an off-road bike site. Presumably the writer does not live in Ashton. Were you being insensitive in publishing his letter or playing devil’s advocate and testing the water for any adverse reaction?
Frank, Ashton resident (by email)
Borough Life receives letters on a wide range of subjects. The fact that we publish some of them doesn’t mean we support the views expressed. However we know there is a small but passionate group of campaigners who think the council should find land for legal off-road biking.
Praise for care service
Sir, – I read with interest the article Who’s that man in my house? in Issue 27 of Borough Life. I must applaud the Mayor for choosing dementia support for his charity. My mother was diagnosed twelve months ago with Vascular Dementia and it is only when this happens to a member of your family that you become fully aware of this dreadful illness. I also cannot praise enough the work done at Heath Road Day Centre (in Ashton) which my mother attends.

The mayor’s charity has already raised over £10,000. If you would like to support this cause you can email Mayor's Secretary or send a donation made out to “Mayor’s Charity Appeal” to the Mayoral Secretary, Town Hall, Library St Wigan WN1 1YN.
