Wigan and Leigh Disability Partnership began life earlier this year and helps people with a range of needs from all over our borough live independently with greater freedom, choice and control over their lives.
Based at Leigh Sports Village, the service was developed by a group of disabled people who teamed up with council staff. It’s the first of its kind in the borough.
Whatever disability or age, the partnership is there for everyone and gives people the chance to enhance everyday living skills.
Disabled people and staff also run conference facilities at the site which can cater for up to 40 people. The facilities are available to community groups at favourable rates.
Board member Bernard Cunliffe says: “We are proud to say that the service makes a big difference to the lives of disabled people.
“They have all gained new skills and are growing in confidence. Some have gone on to undertake voluntary placements in other organisations. Others have benefited from regaining skills after conditions like strokes, acquired brain injury and multiple sclerosis.
“We are always looking for volunteers to get involved and we would welcome help with conference room portering, catering and community projects.”
Anyone wanting to join the group or volunteer should contact Sue Mortimer on 01942 487 865.
