WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTIONS

Bin collections
There are no changes to the days of collections other than:
Christmas Day (Friday) collections will be done on Sunday 27th December.
News Year’s Day (Friday) collections will be done on Saturday 2nd January

Please help by ensuring your bin is out by 7am.

Green Waste Recycling and Christmas Tree Collections

The last green bin recycling collection of 2009 was on 27 November and collections will begin again as normal after Valentine’s Day on 15 February.

However there will be a special Christmas tree and green bin collection made between Monday 11 January and Friday 22 January. Please put out your real Christmas tree and your green bin on your normal recycling week on your normal day of collection.

Alternatively Christmas trees can be taken to one of the borough’s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) with the exception of Orrell and put in the green waste skips or bays.

Christmas Cards

This year Christmas Cards (or any other special occasion cards) can now be put in your white paper sack with your newspapers and magazines.

The only ones that can’t are those with glitter on. The white envelopes from your cards can also be put into the sacks. Christmas cards can also be recycled at some supermarkets so please check when doing your shopping. In January they can be taken to TK Maxx, WH Smith and Marks & Spencer. Take your cards to banks inside participating stores and the Woodland Trust will recycle them and plant trees to create much needed new UK woodland.

Food and drink tins and cans, glass and plastic bottles

For residents with a brown bin please remember to recycle your food and drink containers over the Christmas period along with empty aerosols.

Those residents who are yet to get their brown bin will be getting one in 2010. There are many local recycling facilities located across the borough which accept a wide range of materials. For details of your nearest recycling point please see the website.

Cardboard

Any clean cardboard packaging can be taken to the household waste recycling centres at Chanters, Frog Lane, Kirkless and Slag Lane for recycling.

TetraPak type cartons

Paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid food/drinks can be recycled at several sites across the borough. Please see the website Wigan Council (external link) for more details.

Recycling centre opening times

All household waste recycling centres – Frog Lane, Slag Lane, Chanters, Orrell and Kirkless will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Normal opening times will be in place on all other days.

Further information about Christmas arrangements and recycling, including any changes due to bad weather will be available on the website Wigan Council (external link) or by calling our telephone helpline 01942 404364.
