It’s the slogan that’s become an annual call-to-arms to residents all over Wigan borough to have more of a say in the issues that affect everyone’s lives.
Local Democracy Week runs from October 12-18 and, as Wigan Council Chief Executive Joyce Redfearn explains: “The aim is to encourage people to find out more about how we make some of the big decisions.
“From our children’s education, how safe we feel, how we care for vulnerable members of the community through to concerns about the environment – the work of the council touches everyone’s life in some way.
“We want to make this process as relevant and accessible to our residents as possible.”
Events include I’m a Councillor Get Me Out of Here in which councillors and young people use the internet to talk to each other. Over the course of the week a councillor will be voted out each day, leaving one eventual winner.
Young people get ready to take part in Local Demoracy Week.
Young people from the borough’s schools will be putting together special videos giving their own views on life in the borough.
The headline events will be Wigan’s very own version of Question Time. Hosted by the BBC’s Dave Guest, a special panel of speakers will ‘face the music’ from an audience of residents.
