Local Cubs Tidy-Up

The council’s picking up!
Litter
A stroll down by the River Douglas is now an even more pleasant affair thanks to the tidy actions of a local cub scout group. St Mary’s and St John’s Cub Scouts recently joined forces with the Friends of Douglas Valley and the council’s green team for a tidy up along the riverbank as part of their work towards a Global Conservation Badge. Leader Zoe Halliwell says: “I’m proud of all my cubs and their families for helping to make a big difference.”

It’s the scourge of our streets and a real blight on our communities…

Time and again you put litter at the top of the list of things you want the council to tackle.

The council’s cleansing team is already hard at work tidying up after the selfish minority who can’t seem to use a bin.

But there’s only so much they can do, which is why the council is drafting in a little bit of extra help – in the shape of more than 9,000 members of staff.

Council chief executive Joyce Redfearn explains: “We want to encourage people to take pride in their borough. So we are asking everyone who works for us to consider picking up one piece of litter every day.

“Many of our staff live in the borough and we know they feel passionately about making it a better place to live. It’s all about leading by example.”

The council already works with schools, community groups and the business community to keep our borough tidy and now everyone from teachers to traffic wardens could be joining in.

Joyce added: “With potentially 9,000 extra pieces of litter off the street each day we could see a real difference.”
