It’s best foot forward and eyes front as the borough gets ready to honour its heroes from the armed forces as part of a new national celebration day.
Saturday June 27 will be the very first Armed Forces Day, which aims to mark the outstanding contribution that the armed forces and veterans make to our country every day.
The national day, which replaces the previous Veterans’ Day, is billed as ‘a celebration of British forces past, present and future.’
It also aims to highlight the great personal sacrifices the men and women in uniform make to defend the UK and its interests.
All eyes will be trained on Wigan town centre, which will become the focal point for the borough’s celebrations.
The day will start with a march by veterans from the Market Place in Wigan town centre at 10.45am to Mesnes Park at 11.30am.
Veterans’ Council chair Des White said: “Armed Forces Day is a celebration for all the citizens of our borough to say thank you to all serving personnel and veterans. It’s also a great opportunity to see a small part of the work they do, and to illustrate how much we all owe to everyone who serves or has served in the armed forces.”
